Transcendent

A project that bridges earth and sky

2024

Award: Richard F. Hansen Student Prize Finalist Studio: Architecture x Land Site: Des Moines, Iowa Instructors: Brent Schipper Collaborators: Natalie Gard

Transcendent bridges earth and sky through a journey that honors Greenwood Park’s history and Mary Miss’s lost vision. Inspired by her Double Site, the design carries forward her intention to engage the landscape through meaningful, immersive experiences. Though her work is planned for removal, its spirit endures in a new event center that grounds visitors within the landscape before gradually opening them toward the sky.

Nestled within a dense cluster of trees, the building begins with a sense of enclosure, framing intimate views of the surrounding forest. As visitors move upward, the experience shifts from being cradled by the landscape to extending outward into the vastness of the park and sky. Each floor marks this progression, creating a dialogue between ground and sky, intimacy and immensity.

By transforming movement into an experience of grounding and elevation, Transcendent celebrates Greenwood Park’s evolving story while offering a renewed way to see, inhabit, and connect with its landscape.
